This employment oriented Postgraduate Diploma in Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) is being offered by the premier University of India, the Allahabad University as one of its Central Facilities, housed in the GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT which is the first department of geography in India which offers doctoral programmes in Mapping Sciences and Master’s level programme in various branches of this discipline i.e. Remote Sensing and GIS. This diploma course is open to Graduates in any discipline of this University or of any other recognised University. Preference will be given to students having knowledge of computer and mathematics

MODULE ONE

 PAPER – I : FUNDAMENTAL BASICS RELATED TO REMOTE SENSING AND GIS

History of computers, Components of computer, Binary, Octal and hexadecimal systems, Boolean logic,Common software: MS Word, MS Excel, Power point etc

 B          BASICS OF STATISTICS:

Introduction, Characteristics of statistical data, Statistical methods, Measures of central tendency, Correlation and Regression, Probability.

 C         BASICS OF MATHEMATICS:

Simultaneous equation, Matrices, Solution of simultaneous equation using matrices.

 D         CARTOGRAPHY:

Scale, Projections, Maps, Types of maps, Digital cartography, Digital mapping, Representation of statistical, climatic and socio-economic data through maps and diagrams.

 

PAPER – II : AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

A          BASICS OF REMOTE SENSING:

Introduction, Energy sources and radiation principles, Physics of remote sensing, Platforms and sensors, Remote Sensing in India.

 B          FUNDAMENTALS OF PHOTOGRAMMETRY:

Introduction and definition, Aerial camera lenses and Aerial photography, Geometry of Aerial photographs, Stereoscopic visions and stereoscope, Measurement of height differences from Aerial photographs, Stereo models, Stereoscopic exaggeration and slopes, Principles of stereo Photogrammetry and rectifications, Photogrammetry plotting instruments.

 C         AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY:

Definitions and uses, Stages in production of Aerial photographs, Basic information and specification of Aerial photography, Aerial camera, Aerial film negatives, Basic colour photography, Aerial photography in India.

 D         AERIAL IMAGE INTERPRETATION:

Introduction, Basic reasons for application, Basic principles, Factors governing interpretability, Quality of Aerial photography, Elements of Image interpretation, Techniques of Image interpretation, Interpretation keys, Methods of search and sequence of interpretation, Sequence of activities, Sensors in photographic image interpretation, use of multiple images in image interpretation, Instruments of visual interpretation.

 PAPER – IV : DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING (DIP)

A          DIP-I : INTRODUTION TO DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING:

Introduction to digital images, Image interpretation, form and structure of digital images, digitization and conversion of photographic data to digital data, conversion of digital data to visual form, satellite image formats.

 B          DIP- II : IMAGE RECTIFICATION:

Introduction to image rectification Or image pre-processing, Radiometric errors and corrections, Errors due to atmosphere and their corrections, geometric errors, geometric corrections.

 C         DIP- III :IMAGE ENHANCEMENT & CLASSIFICATION:

Introduction to image enhancement, Techniques of image enhancement, spatial filtering, spatial transformation, enhancement techniques of indexes, thematic information extraction, supervised and unsupervised classification.

 D         DIP- IV :THERMAL AND MICROWAVE IMAGES:

Introduction, Sensors, RADAR operating principles, Spatial resolution in RADAR, RADAR image characteristics, RADAR return and image signatures, Space borne SAR systems. Interpretation of RADAR imagery. Thermal radiation and thermal imagery, Thermal properties of materials, Thermal signatures, Characteristics of IR images, Advantages of thermal imageries, Conducting IR systems, IR region of the electromagnetic spectrum.

 

PAPER – V : GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) AND GPS:

 B          GIS ? II: ORGANISATION OF GIS DATA AND TOPOLOGY:

Introduction, Spatial objects, Raster and vector spatial data models, Attribute data, Relational models, Raster structures, Vector data structures.

 C         GIS ? III: SPATIAL ANALYSIS:

Introduction, Types of models, Modelling with GIS, Modelling applications, Boolean logic models, Index overlay models, Fuzzy logic method, Baysean method.
